I understand the "I can handle it" line--most people do say things like that, even if they don't have experience with the levels I'm speaking toward.

... but you do seem to assume that people are thinking certain ways about your capabilities?

And I used to be a software engineer who ended up in the body of a history and linguistics graduate.
